1. Establish a new base for resistance in thought and art, in defiance of the trend in Japanese society rapidly falling into warfare; examine why and how this shameful situation has been formed; reexamine our "postwar" history in search for an alternative way, not in the narrow, one-state paradigm of Japan, but in wider contexts of the East Asia and the world as a whole.

2. Inspect, from historical viewpoints, experiences of those suffering everywhere in the world, such as women, oppressed peoples or minorities; thus construct a place for dialogue and solidarity among those separated who otherwise could scarcely meet.

3. Create a new style of trans-genre criticism, with emphasis on art and culture - otherwise (current ones being so exhausted and impoverished) we could never go through this "night" to see the time for a rebirth.

4. Rescue and revive the very values of words such as "peace," "democracy," "humanity," "human rights" and "justice, the words to represent universal virtues, now so worn out by the prevailing rhetoric of cynicism, relativism, realism and egoism, or arbitrarily appropriated by overwhelming powers.

5. Never evade responsibility of being "intellectual." We, who know that being intellectual is inseparable from the desire to change the reality, that in order to change the reality one needs to be intellectual, we who desperately hope to live through this "night" with a clear conscience, will exert ourselves to be "intellectual" in the true sense of the word.
