Automatic backup of previous Shelx RES files using WinGXVersions following the July 2002 release of WinGX allows for the automatic backup of Shelx RES files while performing your refinement. This can be very useful when in a refinement and you wish to backtrack to a previous stage in the refinement. When this feature is activated, WinGX creates a directory titled backup which contains the old RES files with a naming scheme of shelx001.res, shelx002.res, shelx003.res . . . . etc
Note: If refining using Crystals, Crystals also has an undo/backup option.
By default, WinGX does not make backups of the Shelx RES file. To enable this, go into File, System, Preferences, Shelxl. Then select the Maintain a backup of previous RES file option as shown below.
Now when you run, Refine, Shelxl-97, a backup of the RES file will be transparently made and deposited in a directory titled backup Using programs such as Windows explorer, you can browse these backups. The filemanager can also display the date and time the file was backed up. Helping you decide which one you may need to restore as the primary Shelx file.
