Why PCs using DOS/MS-Windows?
PC Hardware
- 100 IBM Compatible PCs are presently a true universal computer that
defies geographical and political boundaries.
- PCs are relatively very cheap.
- Easy for relative novice to install.
- PCs are very modular and parts are easy to replace.
- PCs are easily expandable/upgradable.
- Up to a point, PCs are standardised and backward compatible.
- Large amount of expertise/help available.
DOS/MS-Windows Software
Despite many limitations:
- Much Software is Excellent for Research and Teaching.
- Easy for relative novice to install.
- Supports and wide range of peripherals (printers,
video cards, etc).
- Pre-compiled executables are pretty much guaranteed to
run in some form or another. Many have user friendly installation programs.
- Relatively uncomplicated operating system.
- Again, Standardized and backward compatible.
- Again, Again, Large amount of expertise/help available.
